Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

Dialectical means not being black and white but seeing multiple truths.  Dialectical behaviour therapy seeks to help people find the ‘middle way’ or synthesis in order to develop more balanced thinking and behaviour. Dr Olivia Thrift explains Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and how it can help in the video opposite.

How can Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Help?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was developed by Marsha M. Linehan in the 1980s to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, DBT is now used to treat a variety of other mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

DBT is based on the idea that people with BPD have difficulty regulating their emotions. They may experience intense emotions very quickly, and they may have difficulty coping with these emotions in a healthy way. DBT teaches people how to regulate their emotions, how to tolerate distress, and how to build a life that is meaningful to them. DBT is a skills-based therapy, and it teaches people a variety of skills, including mindfulness, how to manage one’s emotions and behaviors in a healthy way and how to communicate effectively with others
